Service & Installation Notes

1. Allow the engine and exhaust system to cool completely, shut off the battery switch, and prevent accidental starting before beginning disassembly.
2. Drain the exhaust manifold and elbow cooling passages using the manifold drain location before unbolting wet-joint components so residual water does not enter the cylinders or intake tract.
3. Support heavy manifold and elbow castings during removal and clean all mating surfaces thoroughly, taking care not to gouge or score the sealing faces.
4. Identify the correct exhaust-elbow gasket for your cooling arrangement—using the open version (referenced by 27-99777-2) or the closed-cooling version (referenced by 27-92720) as specified by your engine manual—and match the manifold gasket (27-815528), carburetor-base gasket (27-807982), and drain plug with O-ring to their respective locations.
5. Tighten all fasteners in the sequence and to the torque values specified in the engine service manual.
6. Supply cooling water before starting the engine, then inspect the manifold, elbow joint, carburetor base, and drain plug for water, exhaust, or vacuum leaks; shut down the engine immediately and inspect if any leakage or abnormal temperature occurs.
