MerCruiser Wet-Joint Exhaust Manifold Gasket Repair Kit for Models 120 and 140

This wet-joint exhaust manifold gasket repair kit is configured for MerCruiser Models 120 and 140 inline 4-cylinder engines (153 and 181 CID, 1982–1995), covering both old-style and new-style setups. It combines exhaust manifold mounting gaskets (referencing 27-96429), open and closed-cooling manifold-to-elbow gaskets, Rochester and MerCarb carburetor mounting gaskets, and a drain plug with an O-ring for wet-joint service.

Configuration & Specifications

Exhaust Joint System Wet-joint exhaust system (Old Style and New Style)
Engine Configuration Inline 4-cylinder, 153 / 181 CID
Manifold Mounting Identification Component reference 27-96429 identifies the old-style manifold mounting gasket version
Manifold-to-Elbow Flow Options Includes both the open manifold-to-elbow gasket (reference 27-99777-2) and the closed-cooling rear-riser gasket (reference 27-92720)
Carburetor Mounting Options Includes separate Rochester and MerCarb-related carburetor mounting-gasket versions (referencing 27-64692 and 27-807982)

Engine Applications

This kit applies to the MerCruiser inline 4-cylinder engines listed below. Because the package contains multiple manifold-to-elbow flow plates and carburetor base gaskets, match each individual gasket to the installed manifold style, cooling arrangement, and carburetor version before assembly.

  • MerCruiser Model 120 — Inline 4, 4-cylinder, 153 / 181 CID, 1982–1995. Wet-joint exhaust system; Old Style and New Style configurations. Fits when specified
  • MerCruiser Model 140 — Inline 4, 4-cylinder, 153 / 181 CID, 1982–1995. Wet-joint exhaust system; Old Style and New Style configurations. Fits when specified

Application Check Required

This kit is specified for wet-joint applications. Confirm compatibility separately if working on a dry-joint exhaust system or an engine outside the listed 1982–1995 Model 120/140 applications.

Service & Installation Notes

General service guidance only. Use the service manual for your exact engine and exhaust configuration.

  1. Allow the engine and exhaust assembly to cool completely, disconnect the battery to prevent accidental starting, and drain the exhaust manifold and riser cooling passages before disassembly.
  2. Support heavy manifold and elbow castings during removal, and clean all mating flanges thoroughly while protecting the machined sealing surfaces from gouges or warping.
  3. Select the manifold mounting gasket that matches your cylinder head and manifold flange layout (noting that reference 27-96429 corresponds to the old-style version).
  4. Select either the open manifold-to-elbow gasket (reference 27-99777-2) or the closed-cooling rear-riser gasket (reference 27-92720) strictly according to your engine's cooling configuration. Do not substitute an open gasket where a closed-cooling gasket is specified.
  5. Compare the supplied Rochester and MerCarb carburetor mounting gaskets against the installed carburetor base to ensure vacuum channels and throttle bores align unobstructed, and fit the drain plug with its O-ring.
  6. Tighten fasteners to the manufacturer's service manual specifications. Upon startup with proper cooling water supply, inspect all exhaust, water, and fuel-air joints; shut down immediately and inspect if any leakage or abnormal exhaust temperature occurs.

The Serdamarine Approach

Exhaust parts need a configuration match. Serdamarine focuses on marine exhaust manifolds and their related service parts. Application details, connection requirements and public reference numbers are presented together to support part selection.

Questions Before Replacement

How do the manifold-to-elbow gaskets in this kit differ?

The kit supplies two distinct wet-joint manifold-to-elbow configurations: reference 27-99777-2 is the open-flow manifold-to-elbow gasket, while reference 27-92720 is the closed-cooling rear-riser gasket. Only install the version that matches your engine's cooling circuit.

Why does the kit include multiple carburetor mounting gaskets?

MerCruiser 120 and 140 inline 4-cylinder engines (153/181 CID, 1982–1995) were equipped with either Rochester or MerCarb carburetors. Both carburetor mounting-gasket versions (referencing 27-64692 and 27-807982) are included so you can use the profile matching your installed carburetor.
