Wet-Joint Exhaust Manifold Gasket Repair Kit for MerCruiser 120/140 Inline-4 Engines (1982–1995)
This aftermarket gasket repair kit services the wet-joint exhaust manifold system on MerCruiser Model 120 and Model 140 inline-four engines (153/181 CID, 4-cylinder) from 1982 through 1995, combining component references such as 27-96429, 27-99777, 27-92720, and 27-807982. The component selection includes manifold mounting gaskets, open and closed-cooling rear-riser gasket types, carburetor base gaskets, and a drain plug with an O-ring; the different gasket types are intended for specific joints and cooling configurations rather than simultaneous installation at the same joint.
Configuration & Specifications
| Exhaust Joint Configuration | Wet-joint exhaust manifold system |
|---|---|
| Engine Configuration | Inline-4, 4-cylinder (153 CID / 181 CID) |
| Riser Gasket Types Included | Open-cooling and closed-cooling rear-riser gasket types (for matching to the specific cooling setup; not interchangeable and not installed together at the same joint) |
Engine Applications
This kit applies to the MerCruiser inline-four wet-joint exhaust applications listed below. Verify your engine model, displacement, year range, and wet-joint exhaust configuration before ordering.
- MerCruiser Model 120 — Inline-4, 4-cylinder, 153/181 CID; Years: 1982–1995; Configuration: Wet-joint exhaust manifold system. Fits when specified
- MerCruiser Model 140 — Inline-4, 4-cylinder, 153/181 CID; Years: 1982–1995; Configuration: Wet-joint exhaust manifold system. Fits when specified
Application Check Required
- Dry-Joint Exhaust Systems — Compatibility is not confirmed for dry-joint exhaust configurations; verify requirements separately if your engine uses a dry-joint system. Confirm application

- Carburetor base gaskets
- Drain plug with O-ring
Service & Installation Notes
General service guidance only. Use the service manual for your exact engine and exhaust configuration.
- Allow the engine and exhaust assembly to cool completely, disconnect the battery to prevent accidental starting, and drain the exhaust manifold and riser water passages before loosening fasteners.
- Support heavy exhaust manifold and riser castings during disassembly, and clean all mating surfaces thoroughly without gouging or warping the sealing planes.
- Select the specific rear-riser gasket that matches your engine's open or closed cooling configuration; do not stack or combine different riser gasket types at the same joint.
- Verify that gasket port openings align properly with the manifold, riser, and carburetor mounting surfaces, and seat the O-ring properly on the drain plug before tightening hardware to the engine manufacturer's specifications.
- After reassembly, supply cooling water and inspect all exhaust, water, and carburetor mounting joints for leaks during initial operation; shut down immediately and inspect if any leakage or overheating occurs.
The Serdamarine Approach
Exhaust parts need a configuration match. Serdamarine focuses on marine exhaust manifolds and their related service parts. Application details, connection requirements and public reference numbers are presented together to support part selection.
Questions Before Replacement
Are the four main MerCruiser numbers interchangeable complete-kit numbers?
No. Reference numbers 27-96429, 27-99777, 27-92720, and 27-807982 correspond to individual components included within this service kit rather than interchangeable complete-kit part numbers.
Should both open-cooling and closed-cooling rear-riser gaskets be installed together?
No. The kit supplies both open-cooling and closed-cooling rear-riser gasket types to accommodate different system setups on MerCruiser 120 and 140 inline-four engines (1982–1995). They are not interchangeable and are not installed at the same joint.
