Service & Installation Notes

- Allow the engine and exhaust components to cool completely, shut off the water supply, and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental starting.
- Drain the exhaust manifolds and cooling passages before unbolting the wet-joint exhaust components, and support heavy manifolds or elbows during disassembly.
- Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly and inspect the casting sealing faces for corrosion, pitting, or distortion before installing new gaskets.
- Compare the removed gaskets and the engine service manual diagram to select the exact raw-water, closed-cooling, or full-flow gasket required for each wet joint; do not substitute a different flow configuration.
- Install the drain plugs with their O-rings, tighten all fasteners according to the sequence and specifications in your MerCruiser service manual, and check for water or exhaust leaks at the joints and drain plugs during initial warm-up. Stop the engine immediately and inspect if any leakage or overheating occurs.

Does knowing I have a 3-inch or 4-inch exhaust elbow tell me which joint gasket in the kit to use?
