- Ensure the engine is completely cool, shut off the battery switch, and take precautions to prevent accidental starting before loosening any exhaust or drain components.
- Support heavy exhaust manifolds and elbows securely during disassembly so weight does not rest on mounting bolts or mating flanges.
- Remove all old gasket material and corrosion from the cylinder head, manifold, and elbow sealing surfaces while protecting the machined faces from gouging.
- Compare the port layout and bolt pattern of the replacement manifold gasket (reference 3852468) and elbow gasket (reference 857618) against the removed parts and castings before final assembly.
- Inspect the drain plug threads and seat the O-rings properly during installation. After reassembly, inspect all joints and drain plugs during initial operation; shut down immediately and inspect if any exhaust or water leakage occurs.
